North Carolina is pushing to expand health care to those who need it most and officials from UnitedHealthcare are urging residents to take advantage of the opportunity and enroll in benefits.

Health officials said the expansion of Medicaid across the state could bring relief to nearly 600,000 people who have been caught in a health care coverage gap. This is where, despite working, they cannot afford to get the medical care they need.

Anita Bachmann, CEO of the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of North Carolina, said the expansion increases the income threshold to 138% of the federal poverty line, which means a family of four making about $40,000 would be eligible and can now apply.

"A few things I would just have on hand, just showing day of birth, as well as that the individuals, a citizen of North Carolina, Social Security number if you have it would be most helpful," Bachmann outlined. "Also just proof of income, so you could bring a pay stub or a W2 form."

Bachmann noted the best way to apply is by using the state's online ePASS portal, but if you don't have internet access, you can apply in-person at your local Department of Social Services office or over the phone. You can also mail, email, or fax your application to the office. It can take up to 45 days for applications to be process.

Bachmann pointed out the benefits of Medicaid expansion extend beyond doctors visits, as families can benefit from preventive care services like annual checkups, dental, mental health and family care at little to no cost.

"Prenatal care services are covered postpartum care, well baby checkups, those immunizations are all covered," Bachmann explained. "Many of the Medicaid managed care plans, they offer what we call value add benefit services, so they're incentives."

The expansion began on Dec. 1 and Bachmann added there is no deadline to apply for Medicaid.
