NH activists pressure congressional delegation on Gaza ceasefire

Community members will hold a silent vigil outside the Dover office of Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., today in recognition of the people killed in the Israeli-Palestinian war.

Organizers said New Hampshire's congressional delegation has ignored constituents' calls for an Israeli ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties, which now total more than 16,000 in Gaza.

Dave Grishaw-Jones, pastor of the Community Church of Durham, said American aid to Israel makes the war an American conflict.

"We want to see leadership -- political leadership, diplomatic leadership, moral leadership -- that rises to the occasion," Grishaw-Jones explained.

Grishaw-Jones noted the vigil will be peaceful and acknowledge the pain suffered on both sides, including those killed in the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel, and the hostages still missing. Opponents of a ceasefire say Israel cannot allow Hamas to regroup for another potential attack on Israeli civilians.

Tens of thousands of Americans have called on the Biden Administration to demand an Israeli ceasefire and end military support for Israel in the conflict. So far, Biden and New Hampshire's members of Congress have resisted those demands, and called on Israel to increase humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.

Grishaw-Jones is concerned America's funding of both Israel and Ukraine war efforts has done little to bring peace or justice to any of the affected communities.

"To simply invest in war-making and invest in these companies that are making huge profits off of war-making is foolishness of the most serious sort," Grishaw-Jones contended.

He added he has taken part in multiple vigils since the war began, and staff from Pappas' office have respectfully listened. Pappas' office did not return a request for comment.
