Thursday, December 28, 2006

Des Moines, IA - Democrats have promised to get a lot of things done in the first 100 hours of the next session of Congress. In response to that pledge, more that 40 organizations, including the Iowa Citizen Action Network (ICAN), have come up with the "Change America Now" campaign, which includes some suggestions for those opening hours. Charlie Wishman with ICAN says it's a list of items that are long overdue.

"Seniors have been waiting a long time for a Medicare Part D program that works, college students have been waiting for
affordable tuition, and it's been a long time since the minimum wage was raised."

Wishman says Democrats who won control of Congress promised there would be much accomplished in those first few days, and that citizens should remind politicians of why they were elected.

"We are going to continue to put grassroots pressure and support behind this agenda to show these elected representatives exactly why they were sent to Washington."

On Medicare Part D, "Change American Now" calls for Congress to lift the ban on negotiating for lower drug prices. Also on the agenda is an end to tax breaks for big oil companies.
