Governor Pawlenty and other statewide officeholders were sworn in yesterday and today the new Minnesota legislature goes to work. Senate DFL spokeswoman Tarryl Clark says expanding early childhood education is a top priority.

"If we can make sure that our kids are ready when they get to kindergarten and we're closing that achievement gap early on, then we're going to end up seeing better outcomes in the long run."

Clark says the message voters sent to all state policymakers is they expect public officials to work together, not fight, and early indications are the new DFL legislature will be able to work with Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty to address the key issues important to Minnesotans.

"We've already set the stage for what we hope will be a productive session with him. On both of our sides, there's a lot of reaching out to find solutions that we can agree upon. Certainly, the things that he's talked on since the election were things we all agree on, and we are all heartened to see him want to make progress in many of those areas."

She adds other key agenda items are property tax relief, universal health care coverage, preserving the state's environment and upgrading transportation. Clark hopes there may also be an effort to enact a statewide smoking ban in public places.
