Renewable Energy Bill Powers Through State Senate

The Minnesota Senate has overwhelmingly approved legislation calling for statewide renewable energy standards. Supporters say that will help the environment, the economy, and will reduce dependence on imports. Senator Ellen Anderson (DFL-St. Paul) is the bill's author and sponsor.

"This bill will set us on the path to have at least 25 percent of our energy come from renewable sources by the year 2020, and it deals with electricity needs across the state."

Anderson believes most of the energy can be generated by wind power, but farm byproducts for biofuels and solar power also are part of the picture. A similar bill is working its way through the House of Representatives, but it shouldn't be too tough a trip -- Governor Pawlenty already has promised to sign it. The bill is based on an agreement hammered out by state utilities, environmental groups, businesses and lawmakers.

Anderson says these efforts should make Minnesota a national leader in the development of renewable energy.

"It means billions of dollars of investment and thousand of jobs in our state. It also puts us on the road to energy independence, starting to kick that habit of importing energy from other states and nations around the world. And thirdly, the environmental consequences of burning fossil fuels are very well known. This will help us have cleaner air, cleaner water, and less CO2 emissions coming from Minnesota."

Timothy Rose with Minnesota-based Fresh Energy calls the new standards smart and penny-wise.

"Minnesotans are very concerned about global warming, and they view the renewable electricity standard as a step in the right direction for global warming solutions. Many people, particularly in rural Minnesota, view the renewable electricity standard as a way to renew and revitalize their own local econimies."

The bill, SF4, passed the Senate Wednesday on a 61-4 vote. More information may be found online at
