TN Amendment Mixes it All Together - Some Call it a "Perfect Recipe"
Thursday, May 3, 2007
Make it a combo and get the best deal. That's what backers of a new amendment are after. An amendment has been introduced that would blend the proposed 40 cent cigarette tax increase for education and the plan to reduce the food tax with a tobacco tax hike. Amendment sponsor Rep. David Shepard says a 67 cent hike could do both, and is something the legislators could be proud of.
“They can actually do something to take home to their people that's really good for people, like reducing the sales tax on food. I think the majority of them will do that.”
Tennessee's cigarette tax is one of the lowest in the nation.
More than half of the cigarette tax hike would go to education according to the amendment. Al Mance with the Tennessee Education Association says the 40 cent hike for education is key to the governor's education initiative, and he thinks there's also room for a food tax cut.
“We're going to be working hard to see that the 40 cents is passed, and we would love for there to be a reduction in the taxes on food.”
