Who's the Best Presidential Candidate for LGBTs? WYO's Ready to Find Out

July 16, 2007

Gay advocates in Wyoming are eagerly awaiting the first ever presidential debate devoted solely to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. Democratic candidates will devote one hour to those issues on August 9. So far, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, and Barack Obama have said they will participate. Bob Spencer, from Wyoming Equality, says the next president will have to be one that responds to the LGBT community.

"There is more support for LGBT issues on a broader base across the country and across the world, and I think that's eventually going to have to be dealt with."

According to exit poll data, LGBT voters make up about 4 percent of the voting population. The event will be broadcast on the gay network LOGO, and streamed online.

Spencer doesn't think the candidates have devoted enough time to LGBT issues. He's pleased that issues like "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and same-sex marriage are getting attention, but he'd also like hate crimes to be back in the national picture.

"It used to be that hate crimes got discussed a lot after the Matthew Shepard incident, but that kind of died out. And I think that's an issue that's very much still in the limelight here."
