OH “Road Rallies” Call on Toyota to Back Green Cars with Green Lobbying

Columbus, OH - Automaker Toyota has a "green" reputation, thanks to its Prius hybrid vehicles, but that's being challenged with a protest effort coming to Ohio. It's part of a nationwide push to point out what some say is the irony of Toyota's position.

As Tom Bullock with the Ohio chapter of the National Environmental Trust explains, Prius owners are happy to have fuel efficient cars, but many are disappointed that Toyota is lobbying against a plan in Congress to raise fuel economy standards, which would save gas and reduce pollution.

"They cultivate a 'green' company reputation, but then they're a bad corporate citizen in Washington, killing auto fuel efficiency improvements. And we're going to ask them to do better."

Toyota is a member of an industry group that opposes the new fuel economy standards, backing a more modest plan instead. Bullock says the auto industry's alternative plan doesn't go far enough, and is full of loopholes. He says in protest, Toyota drivers will gather in a number of locations in Cleveland, Columbus, and elsewhere to call attention to the situation.

John Grant, of the Natural Resources Defense Council, says his group has heard from thousands of Prius owners nationwide.

"Prius owners are coming to us and asking, 'Why is Toyota, a company that can make a car that gets 55 miles per gallon, fighting a 35 mile per gallon standard?'"

Grant says better fuel economy standards would cut oil consumption by more than a million barrels a day by 2020. A recent study by the Union of Concerned Scientists says that would lead to $385 million in annual savings for Ohioans.
