Veteran’s Day VA: Remember Promises Made

November 12, 2007

Richmond, VA – Remember promises made. That's what one veteran has to say today, as Virginia and the nation salute veterans on Veteran's Day.

The memory of recent scandals over a lack of care for injured soldiers is fresh, and so is the renewed commitment to caring for the physical and mental health of returning soldiers, says Vietnam veteran Clinton Pettus, with the American Friends Service Committee.

"Let's take care of veterans. It's more than parades. It's more than kind words about how great we were for putting our lives on the line."

Pettus says his group has documented the need for more mental health resources for returning soldiers.

"If we're going to try to make those people whole, then we should restore them to as much of being whole as we can."

Some Veteran's Day events have become controversial because of the debate over the Iraq war. However, Pettus says today is a day to put aside those differences and focus on supporting those who answer the call to serve.
