Helena, MT – Staying up late Friday nights, staying after school, and making calls to arrange for basics like dental care and clothing is all just part of the job for one Billings Indian education tutor at Riverside Middle School. And it's an effort that is getting special recognition. Diane Neiter has been named the Educational Support Professional of the Year for Montana. She says all-too-often, Native American students drop out after the 8th grade. That's one reason she created an after-class "diversity club" to foster a sense of belonging and help keep them in school.

"It's important for these students to have a place to talk about their issues and to grasp cultural differences. Just getting better acquainted gives them a better understanding."

Neiter says the club focuses on service to others. They are currently making Native American game pieces which will eventually lead to them passing the tradition on to younger students of all backgrounds. Neiter teaches knitting to students on Friday nights to keep them off the streets and club members have even cooked Native American meals and served them to the school's staff.

Neiter tries to educate staff and other students about Native American traditions and believes those traditions don't always align with the standard school schedule.

"For the majority of our Native American people, going back to reservations for a funeral is not simply for the day of burial, or the night before mass, it is a week-long wake."

The award was coordinated by Montana's educators and public employees union M.E.A.-M.F.T. Neiter will represent Montana at the national Educational Support Professional of the Year program.
