Madison, WI – Expect to see more Wisconsin-grown food at local stores and restaurants in the state. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture is announcing seven grant awards today for the "Buy Local - Buy Wisconsin" program.

Rachel Armstrong coordinates the "Buy Fresh - Buy Local" campaign in southern Wisconsin. She says buying locally has a big payoff.

"It can have very good environmental benefits, it can have warm fuzzy benefits, it can have health benefits, but it is an economic development issue."

Armstrong says the program works to establish connections between growers and restaurants.

"We don't take orders, we don't make and distribute availability lists. We foster connections directly between farmer and chef."

She says fruit, vegetables, meat, and dairy products are all being promoted for Wisconsin restaurants. The grants will also help develop Wisconsin agricultural tourism and improve a transport program for getting farm products to the state's towns and cities.
