Denver, CO - Today is the "Transgender Day of Remembrance" in Colorado and nationwide. A candlelight service in Denver tonight celebrates the lives of 26 Americans and Coloradans lost to hate crime in the last year.

Kate Bowman with the Gender Identity Center of Colorado says the justice system should do more to help stop the senseless violence.

"The only way that it's going to change is if the laws get changed to include more severe punishment for hate crimes."

Colorado has hate crimes laws on the books, but convictions on such charges have been rare.

Bowman says it's important to educate people that transgender people are real people with the same rights as everyone else.

"We are taxpaying citizens, we are working, we're carrying our weight; we just have to live our lives."

Bowman believes progress has been made in educating the public about what it means to be transgender, but more needs to be done.

"It has got leaps and bounds to go yet... A long ways."

The Gender Identity Center of Colorado, Inc. is a non-profit corporation providing support to people who cross dress, are transsexual or transgender, or are non-traditional in their gender identity.

The service begins at 7 p.m. at Washington Park United Church of Christ, 400 S. Williams St., Denver. Information is available by calling 303-202-6466.
