Health Care Reform: Mom On A Mission Rolls Into Missouri

St. Louis, MO - The Purple Bus Lady rolls into Missouri this weekend to inspire Americans to speak up about solutions for national health care reform. Kathie McClure is traveling across America in the purple bus to draw attention to the frustrations she and others have felt with the current health care system. She'll also be gathering stories from the Missourians she meets of their experiences. The former attorney began her tour after her adult children couldn't get reasonably-priced policies because of preexisting conditions, such as diabetes and epilepsy. The Missouri Health Advocacy Alliance says McClure's story shows how anyone can get pulled into the health care crisis.

McClure says the future of health care could be decided this summer, and that's why people need to speak out now.

"I think many people living their day-to-day lives are unaware of that. What I hope to do is give people a wake-up call that this is an issue that really affects everybody."

McClure has logged more than 16,000 miles through 25 states since March. She starts her trip through Missouri in St. Louis this weekend and wraps up next week in Springfield.

Her tour is more than just sharing her story, says McClure; it's about promoting guaranteed affordable health care. Millions of people either can't get insurance, or if they have it, they can't afford to use it, she adds.

"I think that rings true for the majority of working Americans in our country today. We can't really find affordable coverage. We really need a public option - a non profit option that's affordable."

Congressional leaders are drafting several health care reform bills, including one that makes insurance mandatory for everyone. Critics of some of the reform measures say they would be too costly and would create unfair, government-subsidized competition to private insurers.
