HARTFORD, Conn. - Haitian relief efforts are underway in Connecticut, through projects to collect hygiene items and collect money, and while Nutmeggers are quick to open their wallets to help, there are some ways to make sure the donation gets to where it's needed.

Daniel Borochoff, who is president of the American Institute of Philanthropy, has tips to share. He says says when donating online, make sure the charity has an actual mailing address and phone number. And never give out credit card information in response to an unsolicited call or e-mail. He says scammers and thieves are quick to take advantage of good intentions.

"There's a certain impulse we have when a disaster strikes. It could happen to anybody; it could happen to us. So our heart goes out for these people. We want to help them."

Borochoff says technology is making it easier for people to donate quickly and effectively during a disaster.

"That's with texting, where you can text and give money that way through your cell phone, and then you pay it on your bill. People are really excited about that because of the immediacy of it."

Borochoff says that as a general guideline, a charity should not spend more than $25 to raise $100.

The charity watchdog group CharityNavigator.Net is one of several that 'grades' organizations based on their efficiency and the portion of their budget going to program services.
