PORTLAND, Ore. - A special delivery is showing up in mailboxes throughout Oregon and Clark County, Wash., this week. It's an empty plastic bag that has the potential to feed a family.

The mission: Gather 2 million pounds of food in one day.

The National Association of Letter Carriers' "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive will be held Saturday, and nearly 4,000 letter carriers are standing by to pick up donations placed near mailboxes. Residents are asked to fill those degradable white plastic bags with food and set them out early Saturday morning.

Kevin Card, NALC Oregon, says demand for emergency food is at a record high.

"We see first-hand what goes on with the economy. A lot of the folks that we will be picking up food for are going to be people who never thought they'd ever have to access a food bank in their life."

The most-wanted items: boxed cereals, beans, pasta, rice, cooking oil, baking mixes, and canned meats, fruits, and vegetables. Last year, more than 73 million pounds of food were collected nationwide in one day.

Card says the donations stay in the communities where they were collected and will be distributed by the Oregon Food Bank Network.

"It's really an incredible opportunity for people to show how much they care about their local community, and on one single day, participate in the largest food drive in the country."

Details on the food drive, as well as hunger statistics, are online at oregonfoodbank.org. The drive is sponsored by NALC, local unions and Wells Fargo.
