Getting the Green Flag: VA School Finishes First in Ecology

FAIRFAX, Va. - A green flag will be raised over a middle school in Fairfax today, certifying it as a leader in creating an environment for learning about the environment.

Lanier Middle School becomes the first school in Virginia and third in the nation to get the award from ECO-Schools USA. The program challenges students to apply classroom lessons to "greening" the school building, grounds and student experience, says Laura Hickey, senior director of global-warming education and training at the National Wildlife Federation's headquarters in Reston. In the process, she says, students have also seen grade-point averages bloom.

"It actually integrates it into curriculum, so that they're learning as they go along. If they're engaged in it and interested in it, then generally their test scores reflect that."

The schools get the added benefit of saving money and reducing waste. ECO-Schools began on an international scale in 1994, and the National Wildlife Federation began hosting it in the United States three years ago. Forty-three other Virginia schools compete for honors, the highest of which is that coveted green flag.

Encouraging students, faculty and school systems to "go green" dovetails with a national goal of boosting the U.S. economy by turning out graduates who are strong in math and science, Hickey says.

"The U.S. at one point was No. 3 in the world in science, technology, engineering and math, but has dropped precipitously. ... We've aligned all of our environmental focus areas to the national standard."

About 38,000 schools in 51 countries are in the ECO-Schools program, Hickey says, and an international component is emphasized.

"We want students to have the ability to work collaboratively with students in other countries on projects, as well as understanding that environmental issues and choices that we make here in the U.S. can affect people in other countries."

More than 1,200 students put in approximately 1,800 hours of service helping Lanier Middle School earn its green flag, according to Fairfax County Schools.
