ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Una vez más Nuevo México obtiene uno de las calificaciones más bajas de los 50 estados para el bienestar de los niños. Esto, de acuerdo al reporte KIDS COUNT 2011 publicado hoy por la Annie E. Casey Foundation. La Directora de KIDS COUNT en Nuevo México con la organización New Mexico Voices for Children (Voces para los Niños de Nuevo México), Christine Hollis, dice que la clave para levantar al estado de la posición 46 en la nación es al enfocar el presupuesto del estado y escoger las áreas en las que se aplicaría para generar más bienestar hacia los niños.

"Promover una mayor inversión en el cuidado y la educación temprana de los niños, vinculando el aprendizaje de nacimiento al 3er grado escolar, es visto como la fórmula más efectiva en costos para mejorar la oportunidad de que los niños tengan éxito en sus vidas."

Hollis añade que lo que más le ha pegado a los niños de Nuevo México es la creciente tasa de desempleo para sus padres, que ha logrado borrar todas las ganancias económicas del estado de los años 1990’s.

"Desde la recesión, la cantidad de niños en Nuevo México que viven en una familia con una madre o padre desempleado se ha duplicado. Estamos también viendo un incremento significante en el número de niños que viven en familias con solo una madre o un padre."

Hollis comenta que la pobreza en los niños es una reflexión del bienestar de la sociedad, y en Nuevo México, una creciente cantidad de familias se están encontrando en essa situación.
