DES MOINES, Iowa - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most often-diagnosed cancer among women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), which also lists early detection as key to boosting survival rates. Des Moines R.N. Christie Weatherly found the disease seven years ago, shortly after her sister was diagnosed.

"I had noticed a lump myself and probably would have let it go a little longer, but with my sister having been diagnosed, I went into my primary care doctor, and from there was sent for a mammogram, and thus I was diagnosed."

She discovered that the American Cancer Society is there around the clock to guide people through every step of a breast cancer experience, she says.

"They have people who can go with you to your treatments if you don't have a family member available; just someone to talk to. I myself went out there and received bras from them."

After her partial mastectomy, Weatherly says, the bras were a financial lifesaver.

More information and 24/7 help is available at 1-800-227-2345 or by visiting www.cancer.org. The ACS says one of every two women with cancer turn to the organization for assistance.
