NV Community Law Day

LAS VEGAS – Free legal advice is available Saturday for Community Law Day, and local advocates say the uptick in the economy also is producing an increase in the number of Nevadans seeking advice in divorce and custody matters.

Lynn Etkins, associate executive director at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, says it's not hard to predict which free legal classes will be the most packed for Community Law Day in Las Vegas.

"While the economy was doing poorly, a lot of people wait to file for divorce or custody action,” she says, “just because they can't afford to file for divorce, or there's also a lot of debt, which is a little bit more challenging than splitting up assets."

Etkins says free legal classes on a variety of issues will be offered in English and Spanish Saturday at the Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Christine Smith, the law school’s associate dean for Administration and External Relations, says UNLV has been involved in this free legal outreach effort since 1998, in part to send a message to its students.

"Our major goal is that students begin to realize, very early on in their legal education, the great need there is to assist people who do not have access to justice," she explains.

Etkins says more than 46,000 Nevadans have already been helped by these free legal classes and this weekend they hope to extend that number.

"And so, what we're doing is we're adding our bankruptcy class, our small-claims class, our guardianship class, and our Spanish family law class on Saturday,” she says. “So, those four classes are done this Saturday only."

If Nevadans learn their legal problem is too complicated to represent themselves, Etkins says those who cannot afford a lawyer, will get assistance in applying for pro bono help.
