What the Affordable Care Act Means to You

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As parts of the Affordable Care Act are implemented, many people are still unsure about how it will affect their own lives.

To help answer those questions, AARP Ohio is hosting presentations across the state.

At the sessions – called What the Affordable Care Act Means to You, trained volunteers – like Ann Lemley of South Point – answer questions and moderate discussions on health care reform.

Lemley says with so much misinformation out there, it's a confusing topic for many people.

"You listen to people, you look at the papers and you don't know what's really true and trustworthy or not,” she says. “Most people that come to one of these feel that they can trust the information."

Lemley says with a few weeks' notice, AARP Ohio can schedule a presentation and the volunteers can tailor it to specific groups.

The AARP Ohio number for more information is toll-free, 866-389-5653.

Topics can include Medicare, the open enrollment process, and how to keep college-age students covered.

Although it's been controversial, Lemley says the Affordable Care Act is improving preventive and wellness services.

She thinks people owe it to themselves to find out more about what it can do for them.

"Many of them have never had health insurance in their life,” she says. “And this is their one chance now to get it, and then carry on with it and get themselves well, and stay well."

Lemley says AARP has been holding these presentations since the spring, and currently there are 15 scheduled.

"It can be held in a living room,” she says. “It can be held in a community building, such as a library, a school, a medical center – most anyplace that people like to gather."

She adds the presentations also include a discussion of the changes to Medicare under health-care reform, as well as proposals to secure the futures of both Medicare and Social Security.
