Great Basin Park Closure Halts Local NV Economy

BAKER, Nevada - Hotels and restaurants dependent upon tourism in the small east central Nevada community of Baker are reporting huge revenue losses as a result of the government shutdown of nearby Great Basin National Park.

All national parks closed as part of the shutdown, more than two weeks ago, and only a few have reopened with state support.

Terry Steadman, chairman of the Great Basin Business and Tourism Council, said the park closure has "devastated" the local economy.

"My peers that I've been talking to - they're members of our council - are telling us they're experiencing losses of up to 50 percent," he said.

Hotels in the area have pretty much stopped taking reservations, he said, adding that Baker's economy is nearly totally dependent upon tourism.

Tourists themselves are yet another casualty of the park closure. Steadman said visitors from across the nation and other countries are showing up at Great Basin - and many had no idea the park is closed.

"Those who have booked rooms and are able to get here (and) haven't canceled their reservations get here and have nothing to do," he said. "And so they're very upset and angry at the government. They spent all this money to come this far."

Steadman said several small business owners in Baker fear they will lose their businesses and homes if Great Basin National Park doesn't reopen soon.
