SPARKS, Nevada - This week's deadly school shooting in Sparks will continue the ongoing national discussion on violence at schools, according to the head of the Nevada State Education Association.

Police say a 12-year-old boy fatally shot his math teacher, Michael Landsberry, 45, an NSEA member, at Sparks Middle School on Monday. He also wounded two other students before taking his own life.

NSEA president Ruben Murillo Jr. said educators always are concerned with making sure schools are as safe as possible for students and staff.

"Guns, you know, we acknowledge that there's a controversy as to what role guns play in violence in our society," Murillo said. "But what me must ensure is that our schools are a safe place, regardless of which act of violence or bullying takes place."

Murillo said the Great Recession has not helped matters in terms of treating students with mental-health issues. He points out that social services funding has been cut to bone over the past few years.

"I do believe that if social services were back to the levels they were, there would be more opportunities to work with troubled youth," he said. "But then again, you can't predict who's going to come up and shoot."

There are reports that the young man at Sparks Middle School used his parents' handgun.

President Obama pushed for more gun control after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults. The NSEA has posted links for educators on its website about dealing with a crisis.
