MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin likes to get a jump on Veterans Day celebrations, and there's a big event planned for 11 a.m. today at the state Capitol.

"As in years past, we do our own major Veterans Day celebration on the Friday before Veterans Day,” explains Chris Stump of the state Department of Veterans Affairs. “And this year, it's called Operation Dust-Off: Vietnam Remembered. It's a Vietnam-specific focus for this year to recognize our Vietnam veterans who obviously did not get the welcome home they deserved."

Wisconsin has nearly 136,000 living veterans of the Vietnam era, and according to Stump, nearly 34,000 Wisconsin soldiers have been deployed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He says there will also be celebrations on Monday.

"There'll be Veterans Day observances at our Wisconsin veterans homes,” he adds. “In Union Grove our Veterans Day celebration is at 11 a.m. and at the King home up near Waupaca it's at 9:30 a.m."

Today's observation at the state Capitol will feature a number of dignitaries and veterans.

Stump adds Wisconsin always has considered Veterans Day a very important day, with observations that are designed to sincerely thank veterans for their service.

"It's set up to recognize the service of those who have sacrificed so much to shape the world we live in, and that's really one of our main focuses aside from jobs and education and getting people benefits and services,” he explains.

“The world would be a very different place if people didn't step up to serve, and recognize people who served, and welcoming them back home with the respect they deserve. It keeps people serving."
