ST. PAUL, Minn. - Many veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq are finding the move back into civilian life can
present barriers, but there is help and it's year-round, not just on Veterans Day.

According to Barb O'Reilly, director of women veterans and employment programs at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, one hurdle is finding a job, so they're working to connect former soldiers with employers across the state.

She said that's "because they really bring some skills and leadership potential to their companies that you just cannot learn in a classroom."

Nationally, the unemployment rate for the youngest vets, between ages 18 and 24, has been dropping, but is still at about 20 percent.

O'Reilly said one pilot program that's just getting ramped up in Minnesota aims to help ease the transition from military service to employment in several key fields of work.

"We received a grant in Minnesota to streamline the transition from military law enforcement and military medic into civilian careers in law enforcement, EMTs and paramedics, and also licensed practical nurses," she said.

There are about 380,000 veterans who currently call Minnesota home.
