CASPER, Wyo. - Amid all the debate about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), another angle has arisen. Wyoming Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis, a Republican, has called for the Healthcare.gov site to be taken down because of security concerns that private company experts raised during a House committee hearing.

Dan Neal, executive director, Equality State Policy Center, said the hearing was all about playing politics, not about doing what's best for Wyomingites.

"We view these as scare tactics. We think she's trying to deflect attention from the fact that the ACA promises many people affordable access to health care," Neal said.

Neal pointed out that the hearing only featured experts who raised concerns, and it did not offer an opportunity for those who know how the system's security works to talk about what features are in place.

About 90,000 in Wyoming will be able to purchase affordable coverage under the ACA. Neal noted that if they do not want to shop online, there are other options.

"If people are uncomfortable - I know some people don't like to use their credit cards on the Web - fine. People can file a paper application, or use the phone and call 211," he explained.

Rep. Lummis is a member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Her news release is available at http://lummishouse.gov.
