Michigan NOW Calls on Lawmakers to Ignore Abortion-Restriction Measure

LANSING, Mich. - Michigan could become the ninth state in the nation to prohibit insurance plans from including abortion coverage, even in cases of incest or rape, under a petition initiative before lawmakers. The initiative would require all private and public health insurance plans to offer a separate rider for an abortion, which women would have to purchase before becoming pregnant.

According to Mary Pollock, legislative vice president of Michigan National Organization for Women, the measure is an unprecedented attack on women's rights, and she said a matter with such broad effect needs to be decided by all Michiganders.

"We think everybody needs to have their say, to learn about this law, and vote on it next November," Pollock said.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder vetoed similar legislation last year, calling it an inappropriate intrusion into private insurance. However, if the Legislature passes the initiative, it would become law with no possible veto. Lawmakers have 40 session days to take up the initiative.

The petition was signed by roughly 300,000 Michiganders, which represents about 4 percent of the state's registered voters. Pollock said it's simply unfair for such a small group of people to set the course for millions of Michigan women. Furthermore, she said, this measure asks women to do the impossible: to plan for the unplanned.

"It is all-embracing and does not take into account that a woman may be pregnant because of rape, incest, that she may have a health condition. "

According to state statistics, only 3 percent of reported abortions in the state were covered by insurance last year, as most women pay out-of-pocket for the expense.

The initiative is online at MichigansVoice.com.
