Minnesota Remembers Sandy Hook Massacre One Year Later

DULUTH, Minn. – Minnesota is remembering the victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, one year ago on Saturday.

As a tribute to the 26 who died, there are ceremonies planned at locations across the state.

Joan Peterson, board chair of Protect Minnesota, says that includes Minneapolis and Duluth.

"We plan to have some speakers and some music, and we will be ringing the bell in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting,” she says. “And then there will be a chance to engage in conversation and talk to people about what they can do in a positive way to make sure that this doesn't happen again."

Family members of those killed at Sandy Hook are asking people to do acts of kindness in the victims’ honor as part of the remembrance.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, there were mostly unsuccessful efforts nationally and statewide to pass legislation aimed at reducing gun violence.

But Peterson says Protect Minnesota will be back in 2014, advocating for safer communities and keeping guns out of the wrong hands.

"That could stop some people who shouldn't have guns from getting them in the first place,” she says. “And it can keep guns from making it into the illegal market.

“It won't stop all shootings, we know that, but it certainly is something that seems to make a lot of common sense."

Saturday's memorial in Duluth is being held at the Myers-Wilkins Elementary School.

The Minneapolis event will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

There will also be a community conversation on the prevention of gun violence Saturday at the Southside Family Charter School at St. Joan of Arc in Minneapolis.
