RENO, Nev. – Nevada's health exchange, where people buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), is reporting a recent boom in business.

CJ Bawden. communications officer with, Nevada Health Link, says its website had more than 80,000 unique visitors during the first week of December, up sharply from November.

He adds many people are rushing to get health insurance in advance of an approaching deadline.

"The deadline for coverage starting January 1st, moving closer to that deadline, is now December 23rd,” he says. “If an individual would like health insurance starting January 1st, they must enroll and pay by December 23rd."

Nevada is one of several states operating its own health exchange where people can get insurance through the ACA.

People in states without health exchanges get health insurance through the federal website healthcare.gov.

Bawden says about 6,600 people have purchased insurance through Nevada Health Link – with 1,800 of those happening during the first week of December.

He says massive media coverage on the recent improvements to healthcare.gov, which ended hundreds of technical problems, seems to be motivating more Nevadans to buy insurance.

"It appears that some Nevadans and some individuals here did not realize that we are separate from the federal site,” he says. “So when the federal site was publicized as up and running, we've seen an increase in participants here in the state."

Bawden says he's seeing people complete the registration and purchase of health insurance through nevadahealthlink.com in about a half-hour.

Registration can be done on any computer with Internet access.
