LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Today is the deadline for eligible Coloradans to apply for health coverage under the expansion authorized by the Affordable Care Act and have their coverage start January 1. Among the thousands benefiting from the coverage are members of the LGBT community, many of whom previously had trouble affording, or even being eligible for, health insurance.

According to Clayton Scherf, health care enrollment program manager for the GLBT Community Center of Colorado, the state's participation in the Medicaid expansion is helping thousands.

"Being that the LGBT community tends to be on the lower income bracket, the Medicaid expansion has opened the door for hundreds if not thousands of LGBT members who have never had health insurance before."

Scherf added that discrimination is still a factor for people in their community - particularly transgender individuals - when it comes to employment or even coverage eligibility.

Coloradans enrolling by today will have coverage beginning on January 1. If you miss the deadline, open enrollment continues next year and it will take about 45 days to receive coverage after you apply.

Johnnie McMurry of Lakewood will go from spending about $1000 a month on health insurance to less than $400, by purchasing coverage through the Colorado Health Exchange.

"It's meant that I can afford to have a decent health insurance policy without bankrupting me," he said. "I can eat better and I can fix my car and I can pay my rent. It's very significant to me."

Clayton Scherf said the rights afforded everyone as a result of the ACA mean a lot to the LGBT community.

"Being able to purchase through the marketplace and not having the discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identify has just huge advancements, and we can thank the Affordable Care Act for that."

More information on the health coverage available can be found at ConnectForHealthColorado.com or by calling the GLBT Community Center of Colorado at 303-733-7743.
