DES MOINES, Iowa - For those already starting to feel the stress of tax time, free help now is being offered at dozens of locations across Iowa, focused on low-income and older residents. The assistance is provided by the AARP Foundation through more than 250 expert volunteers, according to Elmer Neussendorfer, who coordinates the Tax-Aide program in Iowa.

"Taxes are complicated," he remarked. "The rules change every year, so we have to go through a training process every year and be re-certified. And it's just a complicated world with all the changes as far as taxes are concerned."

Last year alone, around 30,000 people in the state were helped through Tax-Aide. Neussendorfer said that for those really struggling with the prospects on their own, the free help can make a huge difference.

"We had one lady that came in, and when I told her she was going to get a refund she started to cry," he recalled. "She said she's finally going to get some sleep because her husband always took care of all the finances. Her husband passed away a couple months ago and she was so worried that she was going to owe money that she didn't sleep for two weeks."

There are more than 60 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites in Iowa to help people prepare and file their basic state and federal returns. Details on locations are available by calling toll-free 888-AARP-NOW.
