HELENA, Mont. – Taxes done and filed for free.

That's the offer from the AARP Tax-Aide program to taxpayers with low to moderate incomes in Montana.

More than 10,000 Montanans received that help last year, and the doors are open for filers this year.

AARP Montana State President Joy Bruck says you don't have to be a member of AARP or a senior – just a person who doesn't want to wade through tax code details.

"It's almost overwhelming for people nowadays to do their own taxes,” she says. “And as we all know, not everyone can afford to hire a tax preparer."

Tax-Aide preparers are volunteers, who are certified through the IRS, and they receive extra training to make sure deductions and credits are not overlooked.

Last year, refunds calculated through the Tax-Aide program totaled nearly $4 million in Montana.

There are 28 sites in Montana, and for those with friends and relatives in other states, Bruck says they have access, too.

"There's about 35,000 Tax-Aide volunteers and 6,000 sites nationwide,” she explains. “And 2.6 million people were helped last year."

Appointments can be made, or you can drop in. Locate a site at MontanaFreeFile.org, or call 1-888-227-7669.
