President Obama Talks Transportation Today in Twin Cities

ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the first time in more than a year, President Obama is making a stop in Minnesota today to talk about transportation and the economy.

Obama is expected to announce a new competition encouraging investments to create jobs and restore crumbling roads and bridges. That focus is much needed, said Howard Learner, executive director of the Environmental Law and Policy Center.

"As people in Minneapolis-St. Paul know well from the I-35 problems, we have aging infrastructure in the Twin Cities and around the Midwest," said Learner, referring to a 2007 bridge collapse. "Potholes need to be fixed. Highways are deteriorating. Bridges are deteriorating."

Once the vital upgrades are made to existing roads and bridges, Learner said, the next priority is to invest in modern public transit and high-speed rail.

"We need to make future mobility and transportation efficiency decisions, recognizing the changing culture - that younger people in particular are riding bikes more and taking public transit more, and driving less," he said. "And we need to have the infrastructure reflect the new ways that people are getting around."

The initiative to be announced today in Minnesota is part of what Obama has declared his "Year of Action" for 2014. His speech will take place at the historic Union Depot in St. Paul, which recently was renovated to serve as a 21st-century hub for local and regional bus and rail transit.
