ANNAPOLIS, Md. - "Treasure the Chesapeake" and receive perks.

A new "plate perks" program has been unveiled for the 400,000 Marylanders who purchase the special Treasure the Chesapeake license plates. Bay plate owners will receive preferred parking, as well as discounts on goods and services - in addition to knowing that the extra fee for the plate is spent in local communities on projects that benefit the bay's health.

Brandon Kaiser, director of marketing for the Bowie Baysox, said the team had no hesitation about wanting to be part of the program.

"It definitely helps us," he said, "since our name is the 'Baysox.' We do like the synergy between the Baysox and the Chesapeake Bay Trust - helping promote a clean and healthy bay."

The Baysox are offering $5 off each ticket for Monday night home games. Bay plate membership cards will be distributed to plate owners free of charge.

Jana Davis, Chesapeake Bay Trust executive director, said it's a way of saying "thank you" to the thousands who have purchased the license plates - which cost $20 extra.

"It's a win for Bay plate license plate owners," she said, "it's a win for the businesses because they get to showcase their focus on the environmental issues, and it's certainly a win for the Chesapeake Bay Trust."

Business interest in offering perks has been strong, she said. They planned to roll out the program with 10 offers, but quickly found 11 - and welcome more.

Details about obtaining cards and participating as a business are online at BayPlate.org.
