Rallies and Vigils Call for Medicaid Compromise

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Hundreds are expected to call on Virginia House members to compromise on a Medicaid solution at rallies, vigils and other events beginning today.

Virginia legislators are debating whether to accept federal Medicaid funding to extend insurance coverage to up to 400,000 Virginians.

Anna Scholl, director of Progress VA, said the idea has strong support in the state, including endorsements from 15 local Chambers of Commerce. She said there are no losers if the state accepts the money.

"This is a pressing issue for families who don't have access to health care, for the hospitals and providers, and for our state," Scholl said. "Closing the coverage gap is estimated to save the state money."

Arguments against accepting the funding center on general objection to the Affordable Care Act and on doubts that the federal funding will be stable.

Laura Meyers, president and chief executive of Planned Parenthood Metropolitan Washington, said extending coverage extends access to preventive care - a key component in controlling costs.

"Those uninsured individuals tend to go and utilize the most expensive health-care vehicle, and that's the emergency room," she said.

A news conference is scheduled for today in Lorton, and rallies and vigils are to be held Thursday night in Charlottesville, Danville, Martinsville, Centreville, Richmond, Roanoke, Staunton, Pennington Gap and Virginia Beach. Dozens of health-care and professional organizations helped organize the events, under the umbrella of Virginia Coalition for a Healthier Virginia. Progress VA and PPMW are members.

The news conference will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at the Lorton Community Action Center. Thursday's rallies and vigils all are to begin at 8 p.m. and will be at the Freedom Wall on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville; at 1432 N. Main St. in Danville; at 240 Commonwealth Blvd. in Martinsville; at the Centreville Public Library in Centreville; at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond; at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge in Roanoke; at Leeman Field Pavilion in Pennington Gap; and at the Virginia Beach Town Center in Virginia Beach.
