New Law Enhances Ohio Insurance Policies

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A bill recently signed into law is expected to strengthen Ohio's insurance market and boost consumer protections.

Senate Bill 140 allows the inclusion of a one-page summary that will give customers an overview of the insurance policy.

Jillian Froment, deputy director of the Ohio Department of Insurance, says summary documents empower consumers by making policies easier to understand.

"They came about as a result of Superstorm Sandy when it was discovered that many of the homeowners did not completely understand what was included in their policy,” she explains. “And when they went to make claims, they were surprised about what was and wasn't covered under their insurance policy."

The new law also permits insurance companies to provide information to consumers through the use of electronic documents.

Froment adds that there are also provisions that will ensure Ohio's national accreditation by modernizing components related to an insurer's own risk self-assessment and credit for reinsurance.

She says these changes will update portions of Ohio law that in some cases were outdated.

The regulation of the investments insurers are permitted to make is also updated under the new law, which Froment says had remained unchanged for nearly three decades.

"Think about in your own personal finances how you have changed how you bank in 30 years,” she says. “So, too, the companies need to evolve and be able bank differently, but in a way that's still overseen by the department."

Froment reminds Ohioans that the Department of Insurance is available to help consumers with any issues they may be experiencing related to insurance.

"We encourage them to contact the department anytime they have a simple question or if they really feel like they're having a challenge, whether it be with an insurance company or just in understanding their coverage," she says.

Information is available through the consumer hotline, 800-686-1526 or at www.insurance.ohio.gov.
