LANSING, Mich. - Being a new mother is no easy task, but those who are breastfeeding just got some help from the state in the form of a new law protecting their right to nurse a baby in public.

Under the Breastfeeding Anti-Discrimination Act, Senate Bill 674, which was signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Rick Snyder, women can now breastfeed at any business, school or other public place without fear of being arrested, kicked out or denied services.

Barbara Robertson, owner of the Breastfeeding Center of Ann Arbor, said it's time Michigan took a stand for nursing women.

"If we really want our children to be healthier and our families to be healthier and save medical dollars," she said, "we do need to protect and promote breastfeeding."

Michigan is one of the last states to pass legislation specifically allowing women to breastfeed in public. Forty-six other states already have similar laws on the books.

Robertson said she believes Michigan has a long way to go in support for mothers and families, particularly on issues such as family leave policies, flexible scheduling and child care. However, she called this piece of legislation a good start.

"We as a state are saying that this is something that's important to us, that mothers and babies breastfeeding is something that we value, and we want to help them be successful with it," she said.

Earlier this week, Michigan received a failing grade in a state-by-state analysis of policies that support working parents in a report from the National Partnership for Women and Families.
