SILVER CITY, N.M. - An event in Silver City today will celebrate Colorado River Day. Its organizers hope to raise awareness about a proposal the state is considering to divert the Gila River, a tributary of the Colorado River, to Deming and other areas for agriculture and other uses.

Sara Benitez, community outreach manager for the Hispanic Access Foundation, said events are to include taking high school and college-age students from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces into the wilderness along the Gila River for a first-hand look at the issue.

"We're taking the youth out to go camping and hiking to visit the Gila River, see where this proposed diversion is and learn about how they can speak up to protect this part of the Colorado River," she said.

Greater focus on water conservation and improving infrastructure could help secure New Mexico's water future without having to interrupt the Gila River's natural flows, Benitez said. The Colorado River has endured more than a decade of drought, leaving water levels at its two primary reservoirs, Lake Mead and Lake Powell, at historic lows.

Colorado River Day marks the 93rd anniversary of the day the Grand River was officially renamed the Colorado. Benitez said another goal of the day is to remind people how vital the river is to the area.

"The Colorado River is important for providing drinking water as well as recreation opportunities to families, and wildlife habitat all throughout the Southwest," she said.

The Colorado River supports human life, wildlife, agriculture and recreation in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

Today's events also include comments from local elected officials, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Gough Park on North Pope Street in Silver City.
