MILWAUKEE - A national fundraiser to raise money to fight cancer will be telecast on dozens of broadcast and cable TV networks Friday, and three viewing parties are being set up to watch the broadcast in Wisconsin.

Jill Haupt is a volunteer on the state leadership board of the American Cancer Society in Wisconsin, and represents Johnson Bank, one of the sponsors of Stand Up to Cancer. She says this is a history-making event.

"This is the first opportunity the American Cancer Society has had to team up with the renowned group Stand Up to Cancer, represented by the entertainment industry," says Haupt. "We'll be partnering to bring awareness, but also to raise funds for the fight against cancer."

One of the largest viewing parties in the nation will be at the Hotel Metro in Milwaukee, with similar events planned at the Rock Garden Convention Center in Green Bay and Pearl Street Brewing in La Crosse. Haupt says the money raised by the telecast will be put to work immediately.

"The Stand Up To Cancer events are specifically focused on raising funds for innovative cancer research," she says. "They're funding dream teams, and this specific initiative is going toward a $20 million research dream team focused on lung cancer."

The hourlong telecast will feature celebrity ambassadors and big-name musical performers. According to Haupt, the dream teams supported by the telecast focus on getting new therapies to cancer patients quickly.

"Cancer facts are hard and they're not pretty," says Haupt. "But when we think about the fact that every day cancer kills nearly 1,600 Americans, it's touched us all. Having a united and very visible group like Stand Up To Cancer participating with the American Cancer Society gives me confidence this is going to move us forward even faster in that fight."

Registration for the Friday viewing parties is still open at the Stand Up to Cancer Stand Up to Finish the Fight website.
