Credit Unions: Financial Education Crucial at Every Stage

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - It's national "Save for Retirement Week," and many Michigan credit unions are taking part in special events and hosting seminars across the state. But they also say this is something they prepare their members for every day, beginning as early as childhood.

Financial education is a lifelong endeavor and a major part of the credit union philosophy of "people helping people," said Colleen Godfrey, a consumer education specialist at Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union, one of the co-sponsors of today's "Reinventing Michigan Retirement" event.

"If we can provide resources, tools, education, free services that allow our members to live happier lives, that's our goal," she said.

Godfrey said it's important to remember that the path to financial success begins early in life, which is why credit unions devote so much time and energy to working with students.

"Many young people don't quite understand the impact that the mistakes that they make in high school and college can dramatically affect them years later, influencing their ability to make a major purchase, even to apply for a job," she said.

As part of the ongoing efforts to prepare Michiganders of all ages for financial success, the Michigan Credit Union League is sponsoring a series of "Teen Reality Fairs" across the state this month. Those events give students the chance to simulate one month of adult living, from choosing a job to balancing a budget and living within their means, and even planning for their retirement.

"Reinventing Michigan Retirement" is a response to Gov. Rick Snyder's special message to the Legislature on aging, in which he urged public- and private-sector experts to develop a package of financial tools and information for Michiganders. Events are taking place in nine cities.
