AZ Organizations Staffing Up For Next ACA Open Enrollment

PHOENIX – Organizations across the Grand Canyon State are staffing up as the next open-enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) quickly approaches.

Pati Urias is with Enroll America Arizona, a group that helps people get health insurance coverage. She says several organizations are hiring and training Certified Application Counselors, who can play critical roles to guide applicants through the ACA process.

"There are about 100 different insurance plans in every county in Arizona. So, many of these consumers do seek to have someone to help them kind of navigate that process," Urias explains. "It can be a little bit intimidating if you're not really sure what types of questions to ask, or what sorts of things you need to be looking at in terms of selecting a plan."

She says research shows about half of the people who sign up for insurance under the ACA have not had health coverage in five years or more. The next open-enrollment period starts Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 15, 2015.

According to Urias, more than 120,000 Arizonans enrolled during the first ACA open-enrollment period earlier this year. She expects the program will continue to do brisk business as competition among providers intensifies.

"There will be a different variety of plans that people will have to choose from," she says. "So, even those who enrolled last year will have an opportunity to either stick with what they've got, through a continuation of their benefits, or take a look at what's new out there."

Arizona is among the states that operate directly under the federal government's Health Insurance Marketplace.

Some states operate their own insurance exchanges. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that more than eight-million Americans have enrolled for coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
