Nevadans to See Major Changes In Next ACA Open Enrollment

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Nevadans will see some major changes in the process of getting health insurance under the Affordable Care Act as the next open-enrollment period begins on November 15.

Tyler Klimas, communications officer at Nevada Health Link, says the biggest change is Nevadans will now get insurance directly through the Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov, rather than through a state exchange.

"We're just going to make this experience better than it was during the last open-enrollment cycle," says Klimas. "Bottom line is this is not going to be perfect, but our goal is to make this plan year better than last plan year. If we maintain that goal, year over year, the numbers will speak for themselves."

Klimas says the state suspended operation of its health-insurance exchange following major technical issues during the first open-enrollment period, which ended in March.

According to Klimas, a new feature added to the NevadaHealthLink.com website is a pre-screener tool, which will help Nevadans determine what they may be eligible for. The pre-screener will link them directly to either HealthCare.gov for a Qualified Health Plan, Access Nevada for Medicaid, and Nevada Check Up, also known as CHIP, which is the Children's Health Insurance Program.

"You'll be able to see agents and brokers, enrollment facilitators in your area, numbers and hours of operations," says Klimas. "You pick up the phone, you can call them, and they're there to help you and guide you through this process."

Klimas adds that as of this summer, nearly 37,000 Nevadans had enrolled for coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
