Experts Recommend When to Step Away from Crying Baby

AURORA, Colo. – Babies cry. Some cry more than others, and while covering basic needs can calm an infant it's not always that simple.

Keeping those facts in mind, experts remind parents it's safer to step away from a crying baby if you're feeling extreme anger and frustration.

Diane Baird, a licensed clinical social worker at The Kempe Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect in Aurora, says Shaken Baby Syndrome is 100 percent preventable.

"Put the baby down and don't frighten the baby,” she advises. “Babies should never feel fear, ever feel fear.

“It does terrible things if you're afraid of the person who meets your every need."

Experts recommend having a plan in place for when emotions run high that might include tips on how to calm your baby or a phone list of people to call, who can come and help take care of the baby. The Children's Hospital of Colorado has more information at CalmACryingBaby.org.

Baird says while the goal is to never take frustration out on your child, it's also important to do the right thing if you have shaken or physically hurt your child.

"Many parents get afraid and delay seeking medical treatment and that causes the damage to worsen and worsen and worsen by the hour, so what you do after it's happened is important also," she points out.

Baird says even when shaking does not result in death, it can cause blindness, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities.
