ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota advocates are adding their voices to the growing call for approval of a federal plan to significantly reduce carbon pollution from the country's aging power plants.

The proposal from the Environmental Protection Agency aims to reduce power-sector emissions by 30 percent by 2030, compared with 2005 levels.

Organic farmer Marvin Boike from Chippewa County said he is backing it because reducing greenhouse gases is vital for the environment and economy.

"I feel that we have to move toward a more sustainable type of energy," he said. "Things don't last forever and there are a lot of small things that each individual can do to help keep the economy going and keep the world safe from all this pollution that we're putting in."

In addition to his support of the EPA's Clean Power Plan, Boike has also taken a step on his own, installing a wind turbine to supply power to his farm and home.

"It's been running now for just about a month and it's doing very, very well," he said. "It's completely United States-made, U.S. produced. And according to my figures here, in a year's time, it'll produce enough electricity to supply about 80 homes."

Those residents and groups supporting the proposal in Minnesota and across the Midwest are taking part in a regional week of action, which includes a petition to be forwarded to the EPA. Dec. 1 is the deadline for public comment.

More information on Boike is online at cfra.org/energy-tour. Details on the Clean Power Plan are at epa.gov. The petition is at org.salsalabs.com.
