Montanans May Like Sage-Grouse as Much as Turkey

BILLINGS, Mont. - Turkey is probably the most popular bird in Montana this week, but greater sage-grouse also have a fan club, at least among hunters. A new poll from the National Wildlife Federation finds 90 percent of Montana hunters surveyed say it's important to protect greater sage-grouse habitat.

Dave Chadwick, executive director at the Montana Wildlife Federation, says there's strong recognition that sage-grouse habitat is also prime habitat for mule deer, elk and pronghorn. There's another important angle as most sage-grouse habitat is in private land, much of it used for ranching.

"If we do this right, we can protect both sage-grouse habitat and also working ranches," says Chadwick.

He calls the poll results "timely," since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has to decide next year if the bird will be placed on the Endangered Species List. Sportsmen in 10 other states were also surveyed and the majority supports conservation of sage-grouse habitat.

One option for Montana the Legislature will consider is a 'sage-grouse conservation and stewardship fund.' Chadwick says the money would purchase easements and help landowners preserve habitat on working lands.

"The key here is if we can come up with a really strong 'made in Montana' conservation plan, then we can avoid the federal Endangered Species Act listing," says Chadwick.

Sage-grouse numbers have been declining because of loss of habitat, oil and gas development and invasive species, explains Chadwick. It's estimated there are between 200,000 and 500,000 birds across the West. There have been arguments those numbers do not merit ESA protection.
