Big Reasons to Shop Small in Connecticut on Saturday

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Black Friday is known as the "official" start of the holiday shopping season, but a newer tradition is picking up steam. Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, an event that encourages shoppers to spend their dollars at local stores and restaurants.

Frank Alvarado, senior area manager with the Small Business Administration (SBA) in Bridgeport, says smaller, local merchants are the backbone of the economy - and the money spent in small businesses stays in Connecticut.

"Small businesses hire local employees, and they sometimes get goods from local Connecticut companies," says Alvarado. "Employees then turn around and go and spend that money in other small businesses."

Last year, U.S. consumers spent $5.7 billion with independent merchants during Small Business Saturday, a four percent increase from the previous year.

Alvarado says the spotlight this year is on New Haven where local officials, Yale University, and the SBA had a ribbon cutting this week to mark seven new small businesses that have opened in the area in the past year. He says this year they are expanding Small Business Saturday to include restaurants.

"Spend a day of shopping, go to a local restaurant and have lunch, or go to a local restaurant for dinner after you are done shopping," he says. "Then maybe go do some more shopping."

A small business is identified as having fewer than 500 employees for manufacturing industries, and less than $7.5 million in annual sales for non-manufacturing industries.
