Tax Clock Ticks: Free Help Available in WY

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Losing an hour this weekend because of daylight saving time probably isn't helpful for those still struggling with taxes.

The tax clock is ticking, and volunteers are standing by at 17 locations in Wyoming to help people file, for free.

The assistance is through the AARP Tax-Aide program.

Tim Lockwood, associate state director for communications at AARP Wyoming, says there are some new paperwork twists this year because of the Affordable Care Act.

"Completing your taxes can be a very intimidating process, especially with the size of the tax code and how much it can change in any given year," he states.

Those who used Medicare or Medicare Advantage for the full year last year do not need to file additional paperwork. But everyone else does need to provide proof of coverage.

Lockwood says to bring family health insurance coverage information if receiving help at a Tax-Aide location, and keep in mind that the free help is available to low and moderate-income taxpayers of all ages.

Volunteers in Wyoming helped more than 4,000 people file returns last year. Lockwood expects more this year.

"Really helps to reduce some of that anxiety, and helps them to have a little more confidence that they're getting back the refunds that they deserve or are eligible for – and meeting the tax code," he says.

It is best to make an appointment, although some locations accept drop-ins.

Find a location at www.aarp.org/findtaxhelp or call 1-888-227-7669.
