DES MOINES, Iowa - As National Nutrition Month continues throughout March, those across the state wanting to make some positive changes are being told to Rethink Your Drink.

Dietician Carol Voss, nutrition coordinator with the Iowa Department of Health, says far too many children and adults are getting an unhealthy excess of calories through sugar-sweetened beverages like coffees, sodas, and energy and sports drinks.

"We also know that, according to our behavioral risk factors surveillance survey in 2012, 72 percent of Iowans consumed one to three sugar-sweetened beverages daily," she says.

Excessive intake of sugary drinks is one of the factors that have led to expanding waistlines in Iowa over the past few decades, with around one-third of children and two-thirds of adults now considered overweight or obese.

Healthier drink choices can cut a person's daily intake by hundreds of calories. Voss says those include water, low-fat milk, and in limited amounts diet beverages and fruit juice.

"Maybe the next time you go to the vending machine or the next time you go to the restaurant, try a low calorie beverage or a glass of water that has a lemon slice," she says. "Something that will replace those calories at least some of the time."

Sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest source of added sugar in the American diet, and are a significant contributor to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
