Think Twice Before Spending That Tax Refund

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. - Tax time is here, and if you're one of the many Michiganders expecting a refund from Uncle Sam, experts say you should think twice before spending that check.

While a vacation or shopping spree may be tempting, Jenny Bickel with Frankenmuth Credit Union says about four in 10 workers age 40 and older come to regret the decisions they made with respect to their financial future.

"They live too much in the day-to-day instead of preparing for the future," she says. "When you do get a cash windfall, big or small, you should really pay yourself first and put a percentage of that away for your retirement."

Bickel says it's important to remember a tax refund is really part of your earned income, and should be treated as such. She adds that many credit unions have in-house investment specialists and financial counselors that members can consult for no charge.

According to Bickel, when it comes to investing, it really is best to seek expert advice – particularly if you're just starting out.

"Even the most savvy investors are tempted to do dumb things with their money from time to time," says Bickel. "Maybe we're too timid or scared, or maybe we're a little too aggressive. They can bring us back in line."
