Unpaid Caregiving Worth Billions in Nevada

RENO, Nev. – A new report measures the huge economic contribution made by hundreds of thousands of people in Nevada who act as caregivers for a family member, partner or friend.

The "Valuing the Invaluable" report from the AARP Public Policy Institute shows that in a recent year 348,000 unpaid caregivers in the state provided care valued at more than $4 billion.

Diane Ross, CEO and president of Continuum, a health and wellness program in Reno, says she expects the numbers will continue to surge.

"We're living longer, and unfortunately as we live longer, we're more susceptible to disabilities, to falls, to chronic issues," she points out.

On a national level, the report shows that about 40 million family caregivers in the United States provided an estimated 37 billion hours of care, valued at $470 billion.

It also found that one in four working Americans over age 25 says he or she is currently providing unpaid care to a relative or friend, most commonly for a parent or parent-in-law.

Earlier this year, Nevada lawmakers passed the CARE Act, which is the Caregiver, Advise, Record, Enable Act.

Ross says it will help caregivers, who are often left to care for others will almost no medical guidance.

"They kind of omitted the caregiver,” she stresses. “A patient could get transferred to another facility, the caregiver wasn't notified – patient was being discharged and a phone call would come and say, 'Your mom is in a wheelchair waiting to be picked up. She's being discharged.' No planning ahead, not letting them know that this was happening."

The CARE Act requires hospitals to enter a family caregiver's name in the medical record at the time a patient is admitted and notify the caregiver when the patient is due to be released.

It also ensures that the caregiver is instructed in any follow-up care needed at home, such as dressing wounds or managing prescriptions.
