LAS VEGAS - People facing divorce, bankruptcy and other legal challenges can get free legal guidance on Saturday at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Classes are centered on showing people how to navigate through a divorce and other legal matters, said Carmela Reed, an attorney with the nonprofit Nevada Legal Services, which is co-sponsoring Community Law Day with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.

"We're describing the process. We're describing what to expect. We teach the participants what forms they need to complete," Reed said. "We also explain to them, step by step, how to complete the form."

Reed said there also are classes on tenants' rights, custody, small claims and records sealing. She said those who qualify also can apply for free legal aid through Nevada Legal Services and the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.

April Green, an attorney with the Legal Aid Center who will be providing information on family law, said people can learn the latest about laws that can change and be updated on a regular basis.

"They find about basic child support laws - who pays, how much, under what circumstances, child custody laws," she said. "We keep up with statutes so that they're very up-to-date."

Community Law Day will start at 9 a.m. Saturday. It is part of the Community Legal Education Program, which operates year-round and has worked with more than 50,000 students.

Information on the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is online at lacsn.org. The Nevada Legal Services website is nlslaw.net.
